After-school Tutorial Programs
This program meets twice weekly at four sites with an emphasis on Reading and Math. We tutor children in 6th GRADE for 1-1/2 hours each session. The major goal is to improve their grades by 5 points or one letter grade, attend 70% of sessions and improve their overall school attendance.
Educational Retreats
As an incentive for improving grades and attendance, top tutorial students are rewarded a retreat to certain places, like Harriet Tubman Museum, Lucy Laney Museum, M.L.King Jr. Center, SCITEK and others.
Cultural Assistance
Students are exposed to plays, museums, restaurants, other cities and states that have cultural significance. We have collaborated with other organizations to bring cultural activities to the city also.
Leadership Development Classes
Various community representatives are encouraged to attend who will work toward improving their skills to become leaders in their community.
Scholarship Banquet
The recipient of the Parenting Excellence Award is honored for exemplary parenting and the PLIGHT Scholarship Recipient and the Rev. Amos Ryce II Scholarship Recipient is honored.
Community Health Fairs
Teen Pregnancy Awareness and Fitness, Health and Nutrition Awareness fairs are held with collaboration with other community organizations that deal with youth.
Community Projects
An annual Red Ribbon Activity is held in conjunction with the national activities, at various schools. Make A Difference Day will utilize tutorial students working with Board Members to help older citizens that are unable to care for their yards in the fall and again in the spring.
